Burna Boy Breaks Down Collaborating with Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA

AllHipHop.com:

Burna Boy is back with a new studio LP called I Told Them…. The album turned up on Friday (August 25) with several high-profile guest appearances, including 21 Savage, Dave, Seyi Vibez and J. Cole as well as GZA and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. Burna spoke to Apple Music 1 host Zane Lowe earlier this week about his latest album.

---------------------------------------

The Zane Lowe conversation included Burna Boy reflecting on collaborating with RZA for the “Jewels” track off the I Told Them… album. Burna stated, “It’s been a great honor, man. He wasn’t there. We weren’t personally in the studio together when he did it, but when he sent the first draft to me, I could just feel the energy.”

The self-described “African Giant” went on to say, “He’s connecting things that have to do with photography, s### that has to do with the vision, like photographic s###. And he’s made the whole thing, he combined and interlock and it’s just crazy.”

'I Interviewed GZA and All He Wanted To Talk About Was Chess'

Vice.com:

When it came to my attention that GZA, on the Melbourne arm of the Wu-Tang Clan’s Australian tour with Nas, would be playing a speed chess tournament in Fitzroy to celebrate the launch of local whiskey brand The Gospel’s new event series, The Fanatics, I said, what?

GZA. The Genius. Credited as the spiritual leader and amalgamator of the Wu-Tang Clan. Lyrical God. Chess lover. It made some kind of sense.

The event was held at a community hall, or maybe a church – vaulted ceilings, lush carpets, and a big cream wall where the chess matches were projected for everyone to get a birds’ eye view of the game. A crowd gathered in front of the stage where GZA was seated, head down, playing his opponents in focused silence. Wu-Tang blared out from a single speaker, and every once in a while the crowd would erupt in cheers.

GZA Hosting Speed Chess Event in Melbourne

Yahoo.com:

Longtime fans of the Wu-Tang Clan know that GZA plays a mean game of chess. The MC has been a devoted chess player for many years now, and, alongside bandmate RZA, once played against a grandmaster for charity.

And now might be your time to take a run at him: in a couple of weeks’ time on Monday, 15th May, GZA will co-host a speed chess competition in Fitzroy North, Melbourne. If you’re not too keen on chess but still want to get in on the action, there’ll also be a meet and greet, and DJ sets throughout the evening.

Students from 2 Baltimore Schools Get to Play in Chess Tournament Against GZA

WBalTV.com:

Baltimore City students took a field trip Friday to City Hall for a chess tournament with a special guest. Six students from Green Street Academy and six students from Cross Country Elementary/Middle School faced off against each other and a hip-hop superstar.

"I keep studying it because it's something that I enjoy," said Nicardo Grant, a Cross Country seventh grader. "They practice in school, after school, even online," said Daniel Katz, a special educator at Cross Country. But it's not every day that they get to practice with a member of the famous Wu-Tang Clan. GZA, from the Wu-Tang Clan, asked Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott to pick a group of students to play games of chess against him while he's in town.

"Chess is an important thing for children," GZA said. "It teaches critical thinking, strategic planning. It's a great game. No other board game compares to it. It strengthens them in many ways."
